CATEGORIES AND ABILITY LEVELS
Basic: Even more simple than a Beginner
arrangement. Usually melody line played with single note /thumb only
and/or alternating thumb rolls, pinches as space fillers. Few if
any special left hand techniques, mostly slides (no hammer-ons or
pull-offs). These are all found within the "Beginner" category.
Beginner: All arrangements
in Scruggs style, all down the neck, all in G tuning. Very few left
hand techniques such as hammer-ons and pull-offs, but some basic slides
are used
Intermediate: Most have down-the-neck AND up-the-neck arrangements, if there
is space on one page. If there was a "Beginner" tab of the same title
the "Intermediate" arrangement usually builds on the rolls and licks
in the beginner level, adding left hand techniques and timing nuances
instead of presenting a totally new arrangement. This way the student
is embellishing the known arrangement and usually adding an up-the-neck
break instead of completely re-learning a new arrangement of a tune
he already knows. Melodic style tunes are included in the Intermediate
category as well as tunes in dfferent tunings. Single string passages
are used in a few tunes if the melody dictates, but nothing elaborate.
Advanced: Includes
fiddle tunes and swing tunes, tunes in keys other than G but played
with no
capo. Extended single string style used in some if necessary to render
the melody or for a "hot lick" effect. Mixing of styles more prevalent,
some even have Scruggs, melodc AND single string style within the same
arrangement. Some tunes are arranged in classical technique, using chord
melody pinch/roll techniques and/or chord tremolo. Some tunes use entire
solos in triplets, especially slow tunes that may have been rendered
in straight Scruggs rolls in the "Intermediate" arrangement. Several
arrangements are "hot lick" contest style variations of tunes originally
arranged in intermediate category, notably the ones that include
more
than one variation.
Scrugs Corner: Note-for-note transcriptions of Earl Scrugs' recordings,
(including backup where noted). Beginner to Advanced levels. Most
vocal breaks
are Beginner or Intermediate., a few instrumentals are Advanced.
Collections: a
collection is a bound group of tabs that fall within the
same thematic or skill level category.
The tabs within a collection
are often the same arrangements as the same title listed individually,
so if you order a collection note the titles and their abiliy levels
so you do not double order a title.Generally buying a collection
is a better value than buying the tabs individually - you get more
tabs for the money. |
